    Speech recognition could not start

    Problem

    When you activate speech recognition in Windows, you get an error like this:

    Speech Recognition could not start. Please change the recognizer language in the speech recognition control panel under advanced options

    Cause

    Having the right language pack installed and selected does not mean you also have its speech features.

    Solution

    For your display language, install the speech pack:

    1. Go to Settings (not Control Panel)
    2. Go to Language
    3. Select the language you're using as your Windows display language
    4. Scroll to the Speech section
    5. Hit Download

    Once downloaded and installed, activate speech recognition again. You may have to completely shut it down and restart it a second time before it works.
