    The spitting spider

    Spitting spider on a wall

If you have cardboard boxes with notebooks and assorted papers in it, and you have large plastic boxes you could put them in instead, and you eternally delay the transferring of the paper materials from the cardboard boxes to the plastic boxes, then you might inadvertently be inviting paper silverfish (papiervisjes in Dutch) into your home, like I did. Thankfully, they in turn attracted a champion hunter, the common spitting spider (getijgerde lijmspuiter in Dutch).

These unpaid pest control contractors couldn't be more delightful. During the day they just chill out in dark, hidden places. After dark, when you're asleep anyway, they quietly go to work. They have terrible vision (three pairs of not very effective eyes, rather than the eight eyes 99% of spider species have), but instead they spread their legs and wait to feel good vibrations through their "feet". They are very sensitive to air movements and surface vibrations. Then they go and investigate and see if it's prey or a mate or a Bad Thing or something less interesting.

When they do find prey, such as a fly or mosquito or paper silverfish or even another spider they can handle, they carefully get closer, reorient themselves, get closer, reorient themselves, until they're close enough (1 to 2 centimetres), and spit a "glue" consisting of adhesive material, silk-like fibres, and venom (a bit uselessly, since it doesn't seem to work on the outside of their prey) in zigzag patterns that keep the prey stuck in place and automatically tighten around it. This is a bad time to be that prey. You're going to get bit, the venom is going to further paralyse you, and then the spitting spider may settle in for a leisurely dinner. It's almost enough to make you not want to be a paper silverfish.
